Quick Catch Up: Hello November

November 1, 2013 | Reads, Style | No Comments

November is a month of wall to wall busy. I start the month in Dublin and finish it in Harrogate!

I’m really excited to be part of the wonderful Knitting & Stitching Show, I’ll be on the Freudenberg Vilene Stand, and I can’t wait to meet you folks and show you some of the amazing things that you can make using the Vilene products. (Hey stitchy friends, I’ll also have a cheeky discount coupon for my book The Sewing Manual too, perfect timing for Christmas I might add!)

So, if you’re heading to these shows, be sure to come over and say hello!

It feels like winter is really setting in. For so many people, the long dark evenings and short (often gloomy) days are something that people dread. Now, I like a spot of sunshine as much as the next person. But, wintertime, with the chill in the air and long, long, dark evenings are something that I’ve come to enjoy.

Rather than thinking that someone has stolen a few hours of my day, I like to think that these are quite hours that I can steal away and spend on something cosy and creative. In our home at wintertime, when the working day is over and all the chores have been done, it’s a time for sitting quietly in front of the fire, working on a project, reading a book or taking time to enjoy something warming and delicious in front of a movie. This is the season I love to knit and work on quilts. I adore the cosy warmth of having them wrapped up around me. We can’t fight the cold, dark days of winter, so I like to make the most of them and all the simple things that come with them.

I love nothing more than looking through recipe books at all the hearty winter recipes, planning out new projects and taking time to get ready for the busy & exciting Christmas ahead, November is the calm before the festive storm, so why not slip into some comfy slippers, grab up your knitting and steal back the darkened hours and make them a time for getting creative?

Because some people really can’t shake the wintertime blues, I’ve been thinking of ways to add a little sunshine to their day. After stumbling across the beautiful wooden postcards from Timbergram I’ve decided to set myself a little lovely letter writing challenge this month. It’s all too easy to dash out an email, or to send a quick text message. But, somehow its hard to find the time to put pen to paper and write out a little note, a card, or postcard. Receiving a letter in the post, that is not a bill or a fast food menu is really uplifting. It;s a simple and lovely way to brighten someone’s day. So for the next four weeks I’ll be challenging myself to write and send one letter, postcard, notecard a week and send it to someone, just to send some love. Why not join me?

If a writing a few cards isn’t enough of a challenge for you, why not take part in The National Novel Writing Month? The say that we all have a book inside us, so why not spend the next 30 days setting it free? NaNoWriMo is a fun, creative challenge for all writers, setting the challenge to write a 50,000 word piece of work in the 30 days of November. Sounds like a tall order, right? Well, put it this way, you can work on any genre, style or storyline that you wish. You can join a huge online community to find other like-minded creative writer for support, motivation and to help out with any dreaded bouts of writers block. With 341,375 participants in 2013 there is no reason that you can’t give it a shot this year – so, who’s in?

In Other News:
The last couple of weeks I’ve had my head down reading, reading, reading. I’ve been working over the page proofs for my new book! The DIY Wedding Manual is now all finished – well from my part anyway, it is now all handed over to the publishers to send to the printers. Exciting times, my friends, exciting times. OK, so we have to wait until February before it will hit the shelves of your local book stores, but if, LoveBirds, you can’t wait, why not head over to Amazon where you can snap up one of the first copies on pre-order!

And, finally…
Remember that day when I said that you could win this delicious Owl Cookie Jar from the lovely folks over at DotComGiftShop? Well, today is the day when the lucky winner is announced!
