Sunday Style: The Perfect Pin Up

Sunday Style: The Perfect Pin Up

December 8, 2013 | Style | No Comments

It’s winter, well and truly. I think I can safely predict that for the coming months I’ll be spending most of my days swaddled up in layers of knits, snow boots, woolly socks and capping of my ‘relaxed & casual’ winter style with pom pom topped bobble hat.

But, that won’t stop me dreaming of endless glamour and beauty of some of my favourite pin ups – old and new, Bettie Page, Dita Von Teese, Marilyn Monroe, Heidi Van Horne, Jayne Mansfield, Bette Grable & Bernie Dexter. I am blown away by their magic, their elegance – it is impossible not to notice how well they are put together, how style seems to drip from their perfect manicures and pristine coiffed hair.

One thing I adore about the pin up style is the inherent flattering of the female form that instantly created though the stylish, timeless shaping of these glorious dresses.  As a fickle creature, it is no wonder that, with weeks of shapeless, cozy clothing ahead of me, I am automatically drawn to form-flattering tailored garments. And, none more so than this amazing Traveling Cupcake Truck Dress, £36.70, ModCloth (ok, this dress could have had me bewitched by the name alone!) But look at the nipped in waist, the flirty full circle skirt, the pleated rouched sweetheart-style bodice and the adorable striking super-sized retro print.

I’ve read many anecdotes of Marilyn Monroe being stitched into her dresses to create that perfect shaping, while we might not want to go to that extreme, it is undeniable that custom-making a pin up dress, to our own body measurements, is the best way to get that sexy, figure enhancing design. Fancy trying your hand at making your very own retro pin up dress? Here’s my all time favourite style, modern retro prints and accessories to create your Perfect Pin Up look!
